Sights, food and shopping around Sapporo and its environs (Day 1)

Day one of the tour’s itinerary consists of the region around eastern Sapporo, Chitose and Tomakomai, where one can learn about the history of Hokkaido, encounter lovely horses and ladies can enjoy a round of shopping at an outlet mall. This route allows visitors to spend time with the gentle horses of Hokkaido, where one can ride on a horse-drawn tram in the Historical Village of Hokkaido and experience horse riding in the spacious nature parks of Tomakomai. Enjoy all these exciting activities while being surrounded by colorful flowers in bloom.
In Chitose, drop by an aquarium that allows visitors to learn about the biology of salmons and spend some time to shop in a large scale outlet mall. Finding all your most desired products in bargain prices, the trunk of the car might be filled to overflowing on your way back!
Focus your palate on Hokkaido’s local produce and famous food for the first day of your tour. The restaurant at Northern Horse Park provides grilled salmon, freshly baked bread made from their home-made natural yeast and delicious sandwich filled with local produce. Feast on Jingisukan and beer in ‘Sapporo Beer Garden’ for your dinner. With the buffet course available, visitors can enjoy this unique dish of Hokkaido to their heart’s content.

Historical Village of Hokkaido

An outdoor museum that allows visitors to experience the history of Hokkaido

Buildings built between Meiji period to early Showa were moved from various regions in Hokkaido and rebuilt or restored in this outdoor museum. Within this spacious 54.2 hectares land, visitors can get to see actual traditional performances, and ride on horse carriages in summer and horse-drawn sleds in winter,. A wide range of seasonal events are often held here and visitors can also take part in daily traditional toy-making experience and traditional games.

Chitose Salmon Aquarium

An aquarium that allows you to observe the ecology of the salmon

Here is an aquarium where visitors learn about the ecology of salmons and freshwater fishes of the Northern Pacific. You can directly observe the environment of the river through the underwater observation room and further your knowledge on these animals through videos and aquariums on exhibit. During autumn, one main draw for most of the locals and tourists is the Indian water wheel that captures adult salmons returning to the river.

Northern Horse Park

Experience Hokkaido’s nature and food

Although located a short 15 minutes from New Chitose Airport, here is one place where visitors can luxuriate in Hokkaido’s nature, food and beauty. While the focus is on horse riding, there are various other activities including horse drawn carriage and park golf. With the grand opening of ‘K’s Garden’ in 2007, visitors to the park can now enjoy a sumptuous garden lunch while being surrounded by flowers.。

Sapporo Beer Garden

A large scale Jingisukan Hall that represents the essence of Sapporo. While gulping down the cool beer fresh from the factory, feast upon the savory Jingisukan. Guests can choose between the traditional Jingisukan cut into rounds of meat or raw lamb Jingisukan and there is a buffet course available too. In addition, the Sapporo Beer Museum next door allows visitors to learn about the history of beer and its science. After touring the museum, visitors can go for a beer tasting session too.
